Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common hereditary human kidney disease. Incidence of 1 in 500 to 1 in 1000.
80% On the short arm of chromosome 16, which encodes polycystin, a transmembrane glycoprotein. Another 10–15% of ADPKD map to the long arm of chromosome 4,
which encodes polycystin 2, a proposed nonselective cation channel.
Cysts may be present within the liver, pancreas, spleen, and ovaries. Intracranial aneurysms, which appear to cluster within certain families, Mitral valve prolapse,
Hernias and intestinal diverticula may also be seen in these children

Clinicians may incorrectly assume that multicystic kidney and polycystic kidney are synonymous terms, but a multicystic kidney is usually unilateral and is not inherited. Bilateral multicystic kidneys are incompatible with life
